Rather than starting with "justice" and "rights" or with the various social issues, the Pope first lays a solid foundation for understanding by exploring the crucial ideas of "charity" and "truth". "Charity is at the heart of the Church's social doctrine", he writes. "Without truth, without trust and love for what is true, there is no social conscience and responsibility, and social action ends up serving private interests and the logic of power."
