Suffering: What Every Catholic Should Know

Suffering: What Every Catholic Should Know

This is the April CD of the Month. The mp3 is available now, and the CD will be available on May 1, 2023.
Suffering is a mystery: an unavoidable reality of human life on earth, which disorients us and tests our souls. It leads us to ask questions about God and his goodness. Though we seek pain relief and comfort, suffering cannot be solved by human effort. Instead, Jesus invites us, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23). As we accept his call to self-denial, suffering can become redemptive, conforming us to Christ in his salvific suffering. This talk will explain Catholic teaching on the redemptive value of suffering and show how it can go from feeling useless to transforming us to be like God.

Suffering & The Love of God

Suffering & The Love of God

Why would an all-powerful, all-loving God allow suffering and evil in the world? As Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D. explains, unsatisfying answers to this important question are the #1 reason for atheism today. But by answering this question with logic and love (as well as with scientific, peer-reviewed evidence for the existence of life after death), we can not only answer this question truthfully and satisfactorily, but also teach our fellow Christians how to suffer well, in preparation for the limitless love of God that awaits us in eternity.

The Roots of the Crisis

The Roots of the Crisis

The clergy sexual abuse scandals have rocked the Catholic Church and caused a crisis of faith (and of evangelization) for many. When facing such a daunting and terrible crisis, it can be difficult to find the right way forward.

In this talk, Dr. Tim Gray explains with conviction and insight that to make any real and lasting change, we must keep faith, and look closely at the deep roots behind this crisis. Times of great scandal and corruption in the Church can be followed by times of even greater renewal and revival, if faithful men and women will enter the constructive conflict that truth requires.

“Tim offers a voice of reason and hope in the midst of these dire scandals. This talk brings light to the darkness.”

God's Family and Ours: The Church and the Trinity

God's Family and Ours: The Church and the Trinity

Dr. Scott Hahn uses familiarity with family life to bring us to a deeper understanding of the Holy Trinity, and thereby a better understanding of ourselves and the Church. This presentation effectively illustrates how the "Good News" of salvation is not only being saved from our sins through the Cross of Christ, but an invitation to become and live as adopted sons and daughters of the Triune God.

One day I found myself wondering how to learn more about the Holy Spirit. The third mysterious piece of the holy trinity. After all, we learn so much about God the Father and Jesus Christ, the son. But in every day life we don't learn a whole lot about the Holy Spirit. When I browsed through the titles on the Lighthouse Catholic Media website, I came across this title was very hopeful. Well, this CD satisfied my curiosity and more. I thoroughly enjoyed the philosophical journey I encountered while listening. It really made me reflect, make connections and continue to ask questions and yearn for more. Some of the topics that particularly spoke to me include (1) the discussion about wanting to learn more about God is the highest form of praise, (2) the discussion about sex being sacred and when we treat it as only good we desecrate a holy and sacred thing, (3) the discussion of the marital covenant which draws parallels between the human family and the holy trinity and (4) the discussion about God not being a solitude but a family with the fundamental features in their perfect -- fathership, sonship and the essence of family: love. Catholic Teaching on Marriage and Annulments

Catholic Teaching on Marriage and Annulments

Are annulments just a Catholic version of divorce? Nothing could be further from the truth. The differences are profound, and much of the confusion springs from a misunderstanding about marriage itself. Bishop Perry explains the key principles of the Sacrament of Marriage and applies them to divorce and annulments. This presentation answers the most commonly asked questions on this topic.

I chose this because I was going to R.C.I.A. classes and my husband needed to get an annulment for his previous marriage. This cd helped us both to fully understand what it is so important and I now understand why it is needed. I am very glad that I got this and I was happy to see my husband get all his questions answered. shandy - Hays, KS
