English Translation:

“Be perfect, as the Heavenly Father is perfect” (Mt 5:48) is an echo of the petition that Leviticus made to the Jewish people in antiquity: “Be saints, for I Yahweh, your God, am a holy God” (Lev 11:44-45).

When Jesus or Sacred Scripture invites to strive toward the perfection of holiness of our God who has created us in his image and likeness (Gen 1:26), this thought immediately comes to mind: is this possible? Isn’t that kind of holiness out of reach for an average person?

Holiness is one of the ways in which the God of the Old Testament showed himself to his people. Although Israel always interpreted it as an estrangement, in Jesus it is rather the way by which God transforms us into creatures/beings similar to his son.

The Church is holy because its founder, Christ, is holy and because the Holy Spirit, his guide and supporter, is holy. Christians are called to this meekness to the Holy Spirit to show the world the presence of the Lord who gives the sanctifying Spirit.

And who has been docile to that plan in communion with Jesus and faithful to the Holy Spirit? Mary, always faithful and docile to God. Father Ernesto Maria Caro makes a journey in this process by which Mary was always Full of Grace, who said yes to the Lord, the first who did “all that Jesus said” (Jn 2:5).

Citing the works of the most recent popes and inviting us to have a foolproof faith and conviction, he motivates us to love like Jesus loves if we want to be effective in the New Evangelization, which is new in ardor, in its methods and enthusiasm, but, above all, new in its protagonists.

Fr. Mike Schmitz, one of the leading presenters in the Church today, speaks powerfully about the Sacrament of Reconciliation. He makes clear the truth that Christ deeply loves and wants to encounter each of us as we are, with all our imperfections. Fr. Mike debunks the lies we often believe about not being good enough to approach Jesus, and he draws upon Scripture to explain rationally why we go to priests to encounter God’s mercy and forgiveness in Confession.

Praise for Signs of Life

“Lifelong Catholics realize that it usually takes a convert to help us appreciate and better understand the customs and practices we too often take for granted. Scott Hahn does just that in this immensely readable yet substantive loving look at Catholic prayer, devotions, and beliefs.”

Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York

“There is genius in Catholicism and once again Scott Hahn unveils it like the masterpiece that it is. Every chapter of Signs of Life is filled with insights and practices that will change the way you live your life and celebrate your faith.”

Matthew Kelly

“Things done for too long can become a habit—and habits have a way of losing their meaning. In this long-awaited treasure of a book, Scott Hahn reveals the historical and biblical roots of so many Catholic practices. Finally, Catholics will not only know what to do but why they do it.”

Raymond Arroyo, New York Times bestselling author and host of EWTN’s The World Over Live

“Professor Hahn’s purpose is both devotional and apologetic. In showing how Catholic popular piety is scripturally grounded, he explains practices that shape Catholic life and help us grow in grace. This is a book that will be helpful to individuals and to the Church as a whole.”

Francis Cardinal George, OFM, Archbishop Emeritus of Chicago

“For decades non-Catholics and even some perplexed Catholics have questioned a number of the beliefs and especially the devotional acts of the Catholic Church. Scott Hahn addresses these questions in Signs of Life, producing crystal-clear explanations of the Church’s traditional practices. His own background as a convert makes him the perfect person to write this book.”

Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, CFR
