The Imitation of Christ

The Imitation of Christ

View book sample

The spiritual classic The Imitation of Christ, the second most widely-read spiritual book after the Bible, has had an astonishing impact on the spiritual lives of countless saints, peasants, and popes for centuries. Even today, the soul-searching words of the fifteenth-century cleric Thomas à Kempis continue to resonate, unbounded by time or geography. Drawing on the Bible, the Fathers of the early Church, and medieval mysticism, his four-part treatise shrugs off the allure of the material world, blending beauty and bluntness in a supremely spiritual call-to-arms.

This beautiful translation by Ronald Knox and Michael Oakley is considered by many teachers, writers, and readers to be the best English translation ever, and one that greatly enhances the life-changing insights of Thomas à Kempis.

About the Author

Thomas à Kempis (1379–1471) was born in the diocese of Cologne and educated by the Order of Brothers and Sisters of the Common Life at Deventer, in the Netherlands. He lived for seventy years among the Canons Regular of Windesheim at Mount St. Agnes, a monastery near Zwolle, where he was twice elected superior and once made procurator. He spent his life reading, writing, and copying manuscripts.

About the Translator

Ronald Knox, a convert from Anglicanism and a well-known Catholic priest and author in England from 1920 to 1960, was educated at Eton and Oxford. He translated the Latin Vulgate Bible into English and wrote numerous spiritual books including The Hidden Stream, The Belief of Catholics, Captive Flames, and Pastoral and Occasional Sermons.

Praise for The Imitation of Christ

The Imitation has come to be seen as the major work of the devotio moderna, which was characterized by psychological insight and an orderly study of the path to contemplation and the love of God. If we could construct a composite picture of all great Christians—Catholic or non-Catholic—of the last five hundred years who found The Imitation substantially beneficial, enlightening, and inspiring, we would need no further proof that familiarity with this great classic is an integral part of a mature spiritual life and even a path to holiness.”

Knight of the Holy Ghost

Knight of the Holy Ghost

Who was Gilbert Keith Chesterton?

A rotund man in a cape brandishing a walking stick? Certainly.

A twentieth-century writer? Prolifically.

A great champion and defender of the Christian Faith? Gallantly.

He is known too as the “prince of paradox” and an “apostle of common sense.” Chesterton has lately been enjoying a resurgence in popularity. His name appears on blog posts and news articles alike. His name is spoken more often on college campuses, and schools around the United States are being named after him. Who was this engaging, witty, prophetic man?

Allow Dale Ahlquist, the president of the American Chesterton Society, to introduce you to him. In a rollicking adventure quite Chestertonian in flavor, Ahlquist captains an expedition of discovery into who this GKC fellow is. He deftly and cleverly explores Chesterton as a man, as a writer, and as a potential saint.

Those curious about Chesterton will have their initial questions answered. Those who might be dubious about Chesterton’s reputation will be challenged to reconsider. Those who consider Chesterton an old friend will be delighted. All will be engaged by amusing anecdotes, plentiful quotations, and a thoughtful study of the life of G. K. Chesterton.

Praise for Knight of the Holy Ghost

Dale Ahlquist is probably the greatest living authority on the life and work of G. K. Chesterton. As such, nobody is better qualified to offer a concise and illuminating overview of Chesterton’s important contribution to contemporary faith and culture.

–Joseph Pearce, Author of Wisdom and Innocence: A Life of G. K. Chesterton

Ahlquist on Chesterton is like Plato on Socrates, or Boswell on Johnson.

New Oxford Review

About Salvation: What Every Catholic Should Know

At every Sunday Mass, Catholics confess that Jesus came down from heaven “for us men and for our salvation.” But what does “salvation” mean? In this robust and accessible book, Scripture scholar and theologian Michael Patrick Barber provides a thorough, deeply Catholic, and deeply biblical, answer. He deftly tackles this complex topic, unpacking what the New Testament teaches about salvation in Christ, detailing what exactly salvation is, and what it is not. In easy and readable prose, he explains what the Cross, the Church, and the Trinity have to do with salvation. While intellectually stimulating, Salvation: What Every Catholic Should Know is deeply spiritual, and at its core is the salvific message that God is love, and his love is one of transformation and redemption.

About Literature: What Every Catholic Should Know

In Literature: What Every Catholic Should Know, Joseph Pearce provides a survey of literary works of which all Catholics should be aware. Beginning with Homer and Virgil, the book progresses chronologically through the greatest works of all time, including Dante, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Dickens, Chesterton, Eliot, Tolkien, and Lewis. Every Catholic should read this book!

About God: What Every Catholic Should Know

Who is God? If we want to love God and make him the center of our lives, we would do well to settle this question at least in some small way. This book serves as a starting point for understanding what Christians mean when they say “God,” and to whom they are referring when they use this name. Part of the What Every Catholic Should Know series, God: What Every Catholic Should Know is born out of the recognition that God is central to the Faith, but we encounter misconceptions about God all the time. In an effort to clear up these misconceptions, this book addresses three major concepts—the nature of God, the Trinity, and the Incarnation—so that we may strengthen our faith and our ability to communicate it to other people.

Fatima for Today

Fatima for Today

Click here to read a sample of the book.

Though the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima took place almost a hundred years ago, Our Lady’s call to prayer and penance for the salvation of souls and peace in the world is as relevant now as when first delivered to three Portuguese peasant children in 1917.

At the peak of World War I, Our Lady warned us of another possible worldwide conflict, the rise and spread of Communism, and a terrible persecution of the Church, unless people repented of their sins and returned to God. She also requested devotion to her Immaculate Heart and a special consecration of Russia.

Much of what Our Lady of Fatima said was revealed soon after her appearances, but the third and final “secret,” which was not a message but a prophetic vision seen by the children, was not unveiled by the Vatican until 2000. Pope John Paul II, who read the third secret while recovering from the attempt upon his life in 1981, believed the vision signified the sufferings the Church had endured in the twentieth century.

Because of the prophetic nature of her messages, the story of Our Lady of Fatima has been the subject of much controversy and speculation. In his book, Fr. Andrew Apostoli, an acclaimed expert on Fatima, carefully analyzes the events and messages at Fatima and clears up lingering questions and doubts about their meaning. He also challenges the reader to hear anew the call of Our Lady to prayer and sacrifice, for the world is ever in need of generous hearts willing to make reparation for those in danger of losing their way to God.

About the Author:

Fr. Andrew Apostoli, C.F.R., a founding member of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, has been teaching and preaching retreats and parish missions for several decades. He is considered one of the world’s foremost experts on the apparitions at Fatima. He is the author of numerous books, including Following Mary to Jesus and Walk Humbly with Your God. Fr. Apostoli is the vice-postulator for the cause of the canonization of Archbishop Fulton Sheen. A frequent host on EWTN, he hosted the TV special “Our Lady of Fatima and the First Saturday Devotion”.

The Evangelizing Parish

The Evangelizing Parish

Written by a highly respected cardinal and a former head of the Vatican office for worship and sacraments, this book shows how the local Catholic parish in any town has tremendous potential to evangelize its surrounding community. Francis Cardinal Arinze reveals the important roles of both priests and laity in spreading the Gospel within the parish and beyond.

This work can help priests to realize the many great possibilities they have to be strong spiritual leaders and to inspire their parishioners to become committed and effective evangelists. It can awaken all the members of a parish to live and to share more zealously the saving power of Jesus Christ.

About the Author

Francis Cardinal Arinze is the former Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. The Nigerian prelate has written many books and articles on theology, spirituality, and pastoral practice, including Meeting Jesus and Following Him, Radical Discipleship: The Layperson's Distinctive Role, Marian Veneration, and God's Invisible Hand, all published by Ignatius Press.

Praise for The Evangelizing Parish

"The Church's new commitment to evangelization is one of the great fruits of the Second Vatican Council. So it's very appropriate that the youngest bishop at the fourth session of the Council, Francis Arinze, should offer the worldwide Church this important reflection on how the New Evangelization can ignite the spirit of mission in our parishes."
— George Weigel, Author, The Fragility of Order

"A beautifully written, eminently practical and useful reflection on enriching the evangelical spirit of the parish and extending its missionary outreach. This is a book to enjoy, learn from, and re-read."
— Most Reverend Charles Chaput, Archbishop of Philadelphia

"If bishops, priests, and laymen implement the Cardinal's clear plan from this book, the New Evangelization will catch fire all over the globe!"
— Christopher Check, President, Catholic Answers

"In simple, emphatic prose, Cardinal Arinze summons priests and parishioners, in union with their local bishop, to put on the mind and heart of Christ as 'major parish actors' in the New Evangelization."
— Steve Dawson, Author, Catholic Street Evangelization

"Drawing on his immense pastoral wisdom and experience, as well as the rich tradition of the Church, Cardinal Arinze offers a profound series of reflections on the role of the parish. This book covers the myriad ways the parish brings the presence of Jesus into the world. It points the way forward if our parishes are to flourish for generations to come."
— Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York

"Cardinal Arinze’s constant recourse to St. John Paul II is refreshing, as is his equally constant encouragement of priests. This is a book for any committed Catholic -- clerical, religious or lay -- but it certainly ought to be a text book in every seminary course in pastoral theology."
– Reverend Peter Stravinskas, Ph.D., S.T.D., Editor, The Catholic Response

Silent Angel: A Novella (Paperback) - Book

Silent Angel: A Novella (Paperback) - Book

Based on a true story that hints at the presence of miraculous grace, Silent Angel is a powerful account of human resilience and heroic faith set against the backdrop of the massacre of Christians during the Armenian Genocide.

This tale opens up with a scene of carnage and devastation, from the ruins of a monastery to lifeless bodies—the doings of an army of young Turks. Silent Angel follows the story of five survivors: three women, a child, and a Greek monk. They are forced to wander through the deserted Valley of Moush in search of a new life and a better destiny than their Armenian brothers.

During the most painful moment of their lives, they become guardians of a book of inestimable value, the Book of Moush, an ancient illuminated manuscript. Believing the book to be a talisman of sorts, they vow to bring the book to safety, even to defend it with their own lives. Antonia Arslan tells this story with intense compassion and clarity, taking the reader on a desperate search for truth and salvation.

“There is a reason why it has come into their hands. It means that the angels who watched over it decided to give it not to wise priests, who touched it ‘with immaculate hands’ as the liturgy proclaims, but expressly to them, this small company of three women, a boy, and a man, fleeing toward the mountains, and united by chance among the ruins of the monastery.”

—From The Silent Angel

Praise for Antonia Arslan’s internationally bestselling novel, Skylark Farm:

"In Arslan’s hands, the gruesome details of this tragedy are palliated by an old-fashioned story of redemption. . . . Skylark Farm is an affecting book." —New York Times Book Review

"Pertinent and provocative. . . . It's Arslan’s precise, vibrant description and sumptuous language that animate every facet of this world touched by death and terror. . . . A finely wrought elegy of her family’s survival." Chicago Tribune

Antonia Arslan is an internationally bestselling author and essayist of Armenian origin. She has a degree in archaeology and was a professor of modern and contemporary Italian literature at the University of Padua.

Recent popes have challenge all Catholics to participate in the New Evangelization. But most Catholics feel ill-equipped to take up the challenge. Terry Barber, founder of St. Joseph Communications, has written a practical guide that takes much of the pain and uncertainty out of sharing one's faith. Based on Barber's decades of personal experience as an effective evangelist and masterful communicator, and drawing on the perceptions, examples, and lessons of other great evangelists and apologist, How To Share Your Faith With Anyone informs, entertains, and inspires would-be, as well as, seasoned evangelists and teachers.

--------------------------

Praise for How to Share Your Faith with Anyone

"Based on thirty years of in-the-trenches evangelism, Barber shows how to pass along to others what you already know but may not know how to share."
- Karl Keating, Author of Catholicism and Fundamentalism

"Terry Barber has long been one of the Church's finest evangelists. His excellent book shows us how the New Evangelization requires new apologetics—a new way to explain why the Church's teachings are true and why Jesus is the answer to the deep desires of the human heart."

Faith and Politics

Faith and Politics

Pope Francis, in his foreword, states that one of the major themes in the thought of Joseph Ratzinger is the relationship between faith and politics: "His firsthand experience of Nazi totalitarianism led him even as a young student to reflect on the limits of obedience to the state for the sake of the liberty of obeying God."; In support of this, he quotes from one of Ratzinger's texts presented in this volume: "The state is not the whole of human existence and does not encompass all human hope."

Ratzinger explored various aspects of this subject in books, speeches, and homilies throughout his career, from his years as a theology professor to his tenure as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and most recently as Pope Benedict XVI. This is the only book that collates all of his most significant works on political themes inside one volume.

About the Author

Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) is widely recognized as one of the most brilliant theologians and spiritual leaders of our age. As Pope he authored the best-selling Jesus of Nazareth; and prior to his pontificate, he wrote many influential books that continue to remain important for the contemporary Church, such as Introduction to Christianity and The Spirit of the Liturgy.

Praise for Faith and Politics

"Ratzinger writes with penetrating intellect and tranquil confidence in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This marvelous volume reconfirms him as one of the greatest Christian minds of the last century."
— Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Philadelphia

"This book will be of enormous value for all Catholics involved in public life as well as for students of ethics and political theory. Ratzinger's works have a classical quality whose relevance does not date."
— Tracey Rowland, Ph.D., STD, Saint John Paul II Chair of Theology, University of Notre Dame (Australia)

"Joseph Ratzinger shows how politics has been—and will be—inadequate, sometimes even dangerous, when it neglects the larger human context offered by faith. And not just any faith, but specifically a faith rightly informed by the theological and philosophical truths that have marked the Judeo-Christian tradition for millennia."
— Robert Royal, Ph.D., President, Faith & Reason Institute

"Ratzinger's works display his usual acuity and profundity. Especially the first four pieces on Christology, salvation, and history are instant classics of theological reflection. The human quest for political order is honored and yet perfectly relativized in the light of revelation."
— Russell Hittinger, Ph.D., Warren Professor of Catholic Studies, University of Tulsa

"Throughout his writings, Ratzinger shows his familiarity with the classical writers, the essence of Scripture, and the historical experience of man's relation to various types of civil powers. To weave these strands together in a coherent whole is the essence of the Catholic mind, no better displayed than in these reflections."
— James V. Schall, S.J., Emeritus Professor of Political Philosophy, Georgetown University

Jesus of Nazareth Part 1 : From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration

Jesus of Nazareth Part 1 : From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration

In this bold, momentous work, Joseph Ratzinger—in his first book written after he became Pope—seeks to salvage the person of Jesus from recent “popular” depictions and to restore Jesus’ true identity as discovered in the Gospels.

Through his brilliance as a theologian and his personal conviction as a believer, the Pope shares a rich, compelling, flesh-and-blood portrait of Jesus and invites us to encounter, face-to-face, the central figure of the Christian faith.

From Jesus of Nazareth:
“The great question that will be with us throughout this entire book: What did Jesus actually bring, if not world peace, universal prosperity, and a better world? What has he brought? The answer is very simple: God. He has brought God! He has brought the God who formerly unveiled his countenance gradually first to Abraham, then to Moses and the Prophets, and then in the Wisdom Literature—the God who revealed his face only in Israel, even though he was also honored among the pagans in various shadowy guises. It is this God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the true God, whom he has brought to the peoples of the earth.”

Praise for Jesus of Nazareth

“Joseph Ratzinger was a world-class theologian long before he became the Roman Curia’s official defender of Catholic doctrine, and then the pope. In Jesus of Nazareth, Ratzinger reveals the core of his personality as he invites his readers into the classroom of a master teacher-one who has absorbed the best that modern biblical scholarship has to offer and has yet emerged from that encounter with his faith intact and enriched.”

Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week: From the Entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection

Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week: From the Entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection

For Christians, Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God, who died for the sins of the world, and who rose from the dead in triumph over sin and death. For non-Christians, he is almost anything else--a myth, a political revolutionary, a prophet whose teaching was misunderstood or distorted by his followers.

Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God, and no myth, revolutionary, or misunderstood prophet, insists Benedict XVI. He thinks that the best of historical scholarship, while it can't "prove" Jesus is the Son of God, certainly doesn't disprove it. Indeed, Benedict maintains that the evidence, fairly considered, brings us face-to-face with the challenge of Jesus--a real man who taught and acted in ways that were tantamount to claims of divine authority, claims not easily dismissed as lunacy or deception.

Benedict XVI presents this challenge in this book, Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week: From the Entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection, the sequel volume to Jesus of Nazareth: From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration.

Why was Jesus rejected by the religious leaders of his day? Who was responsible for his death? Did he establish a Church to carry on his work? How did Jesus view his suffering and death? How should we? And, most importantly, did Jesus really rise from the dead and what does his resurrection mean? The story of Jesus raises many crucial questions.

Benedict brings to his study the vast learning of a brilliant scholar, the passionate searching of a great mind, and the deep compassion of a pastor's heart. In the end, he dares readers to grapple with the meaning of Jesus' life, teaching, death, and resurrection.

The Study Guide is also available!

"Only in this second volume do we encounter the decisive sayings and events of Jesus' life . . . I hope that I have been granted an insight into the figure of Our Lord that can be helpful to all readers who seek to encounter Jesus and to believe in Him."
–Pope Benedict XVI

Praise for Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week

"Working from Scripture, the Church Fathers and contemporary scholarship, Benedict XVI deftly brings together the historical and theological dimensions of the gospel portraits of Jesus. This is a splendid, penetrating study of the central figure of Christian faith; a learned and spiritual illumination not only of who Jesus was, but who he is for us today."
– +Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Denver

"What better guide could you find than Benedict XVI to lead you on the bracing adventure of exploring the historical Jesus and discovering, under the tutelage of this most sage successor to Peter, the inner meaning of Jesus‘ death and resurrection. Faith and reasonare the two wings Benedict XVI takes up to lead us to astonishingly fresh spiritual perspectives and dizzying heights. This book often takes ones breath away, while infusing in the reader the God-breathed Word, which is the Gospel."
– Tim Gray, Ph.D., President , Augustine Institute

"As is his first volume of Jesus of Nazareth, so, once again, in his second volume Pope Benedict XVI has authored a marvelous book, this time on the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. What makes this study so attractive is the depth of its biblical insight, its attention to historical issues, its keen theological acumen, and its lucid and precise expression. Moreover, as with the first volume, it is written in a serene and prayerful manner - a serenity and a prayerfulness that is conveyed to the heart and mind of the reader. This book fulfills Pope Benedict's ardent desire - that it would "be helpful to all readers who seek to encounter Jesus and to believe in him."
– Thomas G. Weinandy, O.F.M., Cap., Executive Director for the Secretariat for Doctrine, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives

Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives

The momentous third and final volume in the Pope's international bestselling Jesus of Nazareth series details the stories of Jesus' infancy and boyhood, and how they are relevant today in the modern world.

As the Pope wrote in volume two of this series, he attempts to "develop a way of observing and listening to the Jesus of the Gospels that can indeed lead to the personal encounter and that, through collective listening with Jesus' disciples across the ages, can indeed attain sure knowledge of the real historical figure of Jesus."

Now, the Pope focuses exclusively on the Gospel accounts of Jesus' life as a child. The root of these stories is the experience of hope found in the birth of Jesus and the affirmations of surrender and service embodied in his parents, Joseph and Mary. This is a story of longing and seeking, as demonstrated by the Magi searching for the redemption offered by the birth of a new king. Ultimately, Jesus' life and message is a story for today, one that speaks to the restlessness of the human heart searching for the sole truth which alone leads to profound joy.

"I can at last consign to the reader the long promised little book on the narratives of Jesus' childhood . . . Here I have sought to interpret, in dialogue with exegetes of the past and of the present, what Matthew and Luke recount at the beginning of their Gospels about the infancy of Jesus."
- Pope Benedict XVI

A Catholic Introduction to the Bible: The Old Testament

A Catholic Introduction to the Bible: The Old Testament

Although many Catholics are familiar with the four Gospels and other writings of the New Testament, for most, reading the Old Testament is like walking into a foreign land. Who wrote these forty-six books? When were they written? Why were they written? What are we to make of their laws, stories, histories, and prophecies? Should the Old Testament be read by itself or in light of the New Testament?

John Bergsma and Brant Pitre offer readable in-depth answers to these questions as they introduce each book of the Old Testament. They not only examine the literature from a historical and cultural perspective but also interpret it theologically, drawing on the New Testament and the faith of the Catholic Church. Unique among introductions, this volume places the Old Testament in its liturgical context, showing how its passages are employed in the current Lectionary used at Mass.

Accessible to non-experts, this thorough and up-to-date introduction to the Old Testament can serve as an idea textbook for biblical studies. Its unique approach, along with its maps, illustrations, and other reference materials, makes it a valuable resource for seminarians, priests, Scripture scholars, theologians, and catechists, as well as anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Bible.

Waiting for Christ

Waiting for Christ

VIEW A SAMPLE

Blessed John Henry Newman was one of the most beloved and well-known preachers of his time. Originally an Anglican priest, Newman converted to Catholicism and became a Catholic priest and cardinal. Known for his beautiful prose and exultant preaching, Newman has long been a source of inspiration for those in the Church. In this new and compact compilation of his sermons, you’re invited to journey with Bl. John Henry Newman through Advent into Christmas and Epiphany, meditating on the coming of Christ and the Christian life. Newman’s masterful knowledge of the lives of the saints, Catholic doctrine, and, above all, Sacred Scripture, will help you immerse yourself in these liturgical seasons of waiting, wondering, and joy.

These beautiful meditations guide you through reflections on:
• Preparing for the Lord’s coming at Christmas and the end of time
• Our dependence upon the Lord’s goodness
• What happens when we do not seek truth
• Mary’s role in salvation history
• God’s call for each and every one of us to holiness
• Glorifying God in the world
• True joy
• Martyrdom, affliction, and consolation
• Love as the one thing needful

Waiting for Christ provides an opportunity to spend a few minutes with Bl. John Henry Newman and Christ every day of the Advent and Christmas seasons, preparing for the coming of the Lord.

Praise for Waiting for Christ

“Daily meditation and prayer, much as one spends time with a friend, is an essential practice for any person who desires to have Jesus as an intimate companion. This wonderful selection of Newman’s meditations enables us to draw close to Christ as we await his Nativity each year, that he may recognize us when he returns in glory.”

– Sebastian White, OP, Editor-in-Chief, Magnificat (USA)

“Newman was a prolific and accomplished writer in many and varied genres, but I have always believed that his voice can best be heard through his sermons. Christopher Blum has captured that sweet voice by giving us a rich selection of Newman’s very best sermons for Advent and Christmas to accompany us through these graced seasons.”

– The Most Reverend James D. Conley, STL, Bishop of Lincoln

“These passages are superbly selected, showing that Newman’s is not simply a voice from the past, but one that speaks to the needs of faith in our day. And the peculiar quality of Newman’s voice is how easily he slips into the background to leave us thinking only of Christ, so that the heart of Christ speaks to our hearts through Newman’s words. This book invites us to spend a few minutes each day with a man of eloquence and holiness—and to be left, not with an impression of Newman, but with a longing for Christ that makes us more ready to welcome him, both in the great feast of Christmas and in the ordinary details of each day.”

– Edward Hogan, Ph.D., Academic Dean, Kenrick-Glennon Seminary

About the Author

Blessed John Henry Newman was born in England in 1801. He spent his early adult life as an Anglican priest and academic. Involved in what was known as the Oxford Movement, a movement within Anglicanism that supported the return to some Catholic beliefs and liturgical reform, he later left the Church of England. He converted to Catholicism, was ordained a Catholic priest, and years later was made a cardinal. Newman was widely known as a powerful preacher before and after his conversion to Catholicism, and was an extremely prolific author, writing sermons, essays, poetry, hymns, and an autobiography. He died in 1890 and was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.

Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko: Truth Versus Totalitarianism

Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko: Truth Versus Totalitarianism

"Listen, Father Jerzy, today is September 14, your birthday. So if you are supposed to do something, this is the day!" So prayed Father Bernard Brien beside the bed of a dying man. As soon as the priest left the hospital room, the comatose patient opened his eyes and asked his wife what had happened. A few days later his medical team, after many tests, observed that his widespread cancer had completely disappeared. The doctors were astounded.

The miracle moved Father Brien to write this book about Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko, to make the twentieth-century martyr better known. He presents an intimate portrait of the courageous Polish priest who changed his life and that of countless others.

As the young and ardent chaplain of the Solidarity labor union, Father Popieluszko embodied the Polish people's resistance to Communism, and for this he was murdered in 1984, at the age of thirty-seven, by the Communist regime's security forces. Soon afterward Father Popieluszko was hailed as a martyr and a national hero, and his example inspired the Polish people to persevere in their struggle for political and religious freedom.

Father Popieluszko's witness of spiritual resistance, deeply rooted in the life of Christ, retains its relevance and urgency in the twenty-first century. The young Polish priest who stood up to Communist totalitarianism at the cost of his life will embolden those who resist tyranny and defend human dignity.

Praise for Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko: Truth Versus Totalitarianism

"Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko is the late-twentieth-century's heroic exemplar of a priest accompanying his people in their deepest struggles, ennobling them with his presence and his evangelically charged message, and pouring out his life for the truths he preached. His priestly witness will inspire many in the twenty-first century to give themselves without reservation to the truth of the Gospel and its liberating power."
— George Weigel, Biographer of Pope Saint John Paul II

"Father Jerzy Popieluszko was a patriot, a prophet, and a heroic martyr for the Gospel. I have relied on his intercession for decades. His story will inspire any Catholic to be a confident and courageous witness to the truth about our humanity, our freedom, and our Lord, Jesus Christ."

Orthodoxy

Orthodoxy

“This is the thrilling romance of Orthodoxy. People have fallen into a foolish habit of speaking of orthodoxy as something heavy, humdrum, and safe. There never was anything so perilous or so exciting as orthodoxy.”
–G.K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy

In a time when relativism prevails in our culture, the choice to be an “orthodox” Christian can seem “heavy, humdrum, and safe.” G.K. Chesterton recognized this over a hundred years ago, and it is still true today: people have become deaf and blind to the high adventure of the Christian Faith.

Of the numerous works that Chesterton wrote, the most brilliant synthesis of his philosophy and deeply religious faith is manifested in his masterpiece, Orthodoxy. Written when he was only thirty-four, it tells, in his inimitable, soaring prose, of his earthshaking discovery that orthodoxy is the only satisfactory answer to the riddle of the universe. Orthodoxy is perhaps the most outstanding example of the originality of his style and the brilliance of his thought. C.S. Lewis and many other emerging Christian thinkers have found this book a pivotal step in their adoption of a credible Christian Faith.

In Orthodoxy, Chesterton sets out on a quest to defend Christianity–contemplating its strange yet true paradoxes, examining today's unhinged modern philosophies, and ultimately concluding with the deliriously joyful truth of the Good News. Never has a defense of Christianity been so compellingly unorthodox as in Orthodoxy. An intellectual and spiritual autobiography of sorts, Orthodoxy describes Chesterton's journey, a rip-roaring adventure, of discovering the ONe who is Goodness, Truth, and Beauty itself.

About the Author

G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936) was one of the most beloved and prolific writers of the twentieth century. He established his fame as a playwright, novelist, poet, literary commentator, pamphleteer, essayist, lecturer, apologist, and editor. THe depth and range of his work are astonishing.

A convert to Catholicism in 1922, he defended the Church long before he was Catholic himself. Known in his time for his distinctive appearance and astonishing presence, he is known today as the “prince of paradox” and the “apostle of common sense.”

Spanish - Nacido Fundamentalista, Nacido de Nuevo Católico

"David Currie ha escrito lo que puede llegar a ser la obra más importante sobre el dificil tema de los evangélicos que son recibidos en la Iglesia Católica."
–Thomas Howard, Autor de Evangelical Is Not Enough

English Translation:

David Currie was raised in a devout Christian family whose father was a fundamentalist preacher and both parents teachers at Moody Bible Institute. Currie's whole upbringing was immersed in the life of fundamentalist Protestantism...theology professors, seminary presidents, and founders of evangelical mission agencies were frequent guests at his family dinner table. Currie received a degree from Trinity International University and studied in the Masters of Divinity program.

This book was written as an explanation to his fundamentalist and evangelical friends and family about why he became Catholic. Currie presents a very lucid, systematic, and intelligible account of the reasons for his conversion to the ancient Church that Christ founded. He gives a detailed discussion of the important theological and doctrinal beliefs Catholics and evangelicals hold in common, as well as the key doctrines that separate us, particularly the Eucharist, the Pope, and Mary.

Abandonment to Divine Providence

Abandonment to Divine Providence

Click here to read a sample.

God is to be found in the simplest of our daily activities and especially through total surrender to whatever is his will for each of us. That is the message of this 18th-century inspirational classic by Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Its encouragement to “live in the present moment,” accepting everyday obstacles with faith, humility, and love, has guided generations of believers to holiness and spiritual peace.

De Caussade shows that this practice of self-abandonment to God’s will is the key to attaining true peace and virtue, and that it is readily available to all people—from beginners to those well advanced in the spiritual life. He also shows how to determine what God’s will is for us. He reveals that it is not extraordinary feats that God expects for our growth in holiness, but rather heroic attention to every detail in our lives and humble acceptance of our daily lot in life as coming from his hand.

The rich spiritual lessons in this book have stood the test of time, offering real and practical assistance to all people because its message is simple and clear, one that the reader will find to be a rare treasure of inspiration and direction to be referred to again and again.

About the Author

Fr. Jean Pierre de Caussade, S.J. (1675–1751) was a French Jesuit priest and author, most well-known for this famous treatise, Abandonment to Divine Providence, and also his letters to the Visitation nuns, where he served as confessor and spiritual director. He also served as the rector of two colleges, and as spiritual director for a Jesuit house. He was deeply influenced by the writings of both Saint Francis de Sales and Saint John of the Cross.

Praise for Abandonment to Divine Providence

“In his famous classic, Father de Caussade makes one point, and he illustrates it in many different ways. That point is: do the will of God to the best of your ability and you will attain peace of soul here and life everlasting hereafter.”

– Fr. Kenneth Baker, S.J., Author, Inside the Bible

“Jean-Pierre de Caussade’s Abandonment to Divine Providence illuminates the great truth that sanctity is accessible to anyone who seeks concord between his own will and God’s. By following this spiritual way, one learns that the Providence of God need not be experienced as a threat to human nourishing, but rather as a lure by which we are drawn into deeper communion with the Divine Life.”

– Bishop Robert Barron, S.T.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles, Founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries

For the first time ever, we are excited to offer a Spanish language book that is not a translation of a previously released English title. This book was written in Spanish by a native speaker specifically for the Spanish-speaking world.

A wedding ring is something very special, and we normally wear it at all times because it signifies the most important things in our lives. It symbolizes our marriage relationship, our family, our children, our home, and the blessings of God, as well as many other things. Fr. Ángel asks: “How can such a small object— a ring—signify something so great: love and fidelity?”

In these pages, he offers us the answer. With a simple approach to the marital commitment, and using the visible appearance of the wedding ring, Fr. Ángel teaches us about the profound plan that God has for marriage. In his unique style, he brings us from tears to laughter, oftentimes on the same page, to remind us that, like the ring, marriage is forever.

Five Proofs of the Existence of God

Five Proofs of the Existence of God

This book provides a detailed, updated exposition and defense of five of the historically most important (but in recent years largely neglected) philosophical proofs of God’s existence: the Aristotelian, the Neo-Platonic, the Augustinian, the Thomistic, and the Rationalist.

It also offers a thorough treatment of each of the key divine attributes—unity, simplicity, eternity, omnipotence, omniscience, perfect goodness, and so forth—showing that they must be possessed by the God whose existence is demonstrated by the proofs. Finally, it answers at length all of the objections that have been leveled against these proofs.

This work provides as ambitious and complete a defense of traditional natural theology as is currently in print. Its aim is to vindicate the view of the greatest philosophers of the past— thinkers like Aristotle, Plotinus, Augustine, Aquinas, Leibniz, and many others— that the existence of God can be established with certainty by way of purely rational arguments. It thereby serves as a refutation both of atheism and of the fideism that gives aid and comfort to atheism.

Praise for Five Proofs of the Existence of God

"A watershed book. Feser has completely severed the intellectual legs upon which modern atheism had hoped to stand."
— Matthew Levering, James N. and Mary D. Perry Jr. Chair of Theology, Mundelein Seminary

"A powerful and important book. The concluding chapter, where Feser replies to possible objections to his arguments, is a gem; it alone is worth the price of this excellent work."
— Stephen T. Davis, Russell K. Pitzer Professor of Philosophy, Claremont McKenna College

"Edward Feser is widely recognized as a top scholar in the history of philosophy in general, and in Thomistic and Aristotelian philosophy in particular. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in natural theology. I happily and highly recommend it."
— J. P. Moreland, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, Biola University

"Refutes with devastating effect the standard objections to theistic proofs, from David Hume to the New Atheists."
— Robert C. Koons, Professor of Philosophy, University of Texas at Austin

"Yet another fine book by Edward Feser. He replies to (literally) all of the objections and shows convincingly how the most popular objections (the kind one hears in Introduction to Philosophy courses) are very often completely beside the point and, even when they're not, are 'staggeringly feeble and overrated'."
— Alfred J. Freddoso, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, University of Notre Dame

One Beautiful Dream

One Beautiful Dream

Pursue your passions, love your family, and say goodbye to guilt—pipe dream or possibility?

Work and family, individuality and motherhood, the creative life and family life — women are told constantly that they can’t have it all. One Beautiful Dream is the deeply personal, often humorous tale of what happened when one woman dared to believe that you can have it all—if you're willing to reimagine what having it all looks like.

Jennifer Fulwiler is the last person you might expect to be the mother of six young children. First of all, she's an introvert only child, self-described workaholic, and former atheist who never intended to have a family. Oh, and Jennifer has a blood-clotting disorder exacerbated by pregnancy that has threatened her life on more than one occasion.

One Beautiful Dream is the story of what happens when one woman embarks on the wild experiment of chasing her dreams with multiple kids in diapers. It's the tale of learning that opening your life to others means that everything will get noisy and chaotic, but that it is in this mess that you'll find real joy.

Jennifer's quest takes her in search of wisdom from a cast of colorful characters, including her Ivy-League-educated husband, her Texan mother-in-law who crushes wasps with her fist while arguing with wrong number calls about politics, and a best friend who's never afraid to tell it like it is. Through it all, Jennifer moves toward the realization that the life you need is not the life you would have originally chosen for yourself. And maybe, just maybe, it's better that way.

Hilarious, highly relatable, and brutally honest, Jennifer's story will spark clarity and comfort to your own tug-of-war between all that is good and beautiful about family life and the incredible sacrifice it entails. Parenthood, personal ambitions, family planning, and faith—it's complicated. Let this book be your invitation to the unexpected, yet beautiful dream of saying yes to them all, with God's help.

Something Other Than God: How I Passionately Sought Happiness and Accidentally Found It

Something Other Than God: How I Passionately Sought Happiness and Accidentally Found It

Jennifer Fulwiler had it all: a life of travel, a husband with a stack of Ivy League degrees, a swanky condo in the heart of Austin, and a beautiful first-born son. Then, one night, the questions she had been holding at bay by a life of fun and excitement came flooding over her. Raised in an atheist home in Bible Belt Texas, Jennifer mocked Christianity from her childhood. One fateful experience as an eleven-year-old caused her to experience the fear of mortality, which she only managed to ward off by focusing on the next big plan for her life. Once she began to allow herself to pose those questions again, she set out on a blog-writing and book-reading quest for the truth about suffering, evil, death, and whether or not Jesus Christ is who he said he was. A moving memoir of her conversion, Jennifer Fulwiler is poignantly, often hilariously, honest in Something other than God.

Shadow of His Wings

Shadow of His Wings

Here is the astonishing true story (abridged version) of the harrowing experiences of a young German seminarian drafted into Hitler’s dreaded SS at the onset of World War II. Without betraying his Christian ideals, against all odds, and in the face of evil, Geron Goldmann was able to complete his priestly training, be ordained and secretary minister to German Catholic soldiers and innocent civilian victims caught up in the horrors of war. How it all came to pass will astound you.

Fr. Goldmann tells of his own incredible experiences of the trials of war, his many escapes from almost certain death, and the diabolical persecution that he and his fellow Catholic soldiers encountered on account of their faith. What emerges is an extraordinary witness to the workings of Divine Providence and the undying power of love, prayer, faith, and sacrifice.

I enjoyed hearing the experiences of another faithful catholic with struggles and miracles during trials and doubt while continuing to do God's will and listening to God through people even when it would take a miracle to come to fruition. That has helped me to see how God can and does work through us in all circumstances even when we cannot see how God is using us. Sybil - Ville Platte, LA

The Ear of the Heart

The Ear of the Heart

“Listen and attend with the ear of your heart.” - Saint Benedict.

Dolores Hart stunned Hollywood in 1963, when after ten highly successful feature films, she chose to enter a contemplative monastery. Now, fifty years later, Mother Dolores gives this fascinating account of her life, with co-author and life-long friend, Richard DeNeut.

Dolores was a bright and beautiful college student when she made her film debut with Elvis Presley in Paramount's 1957 Loving You. She acted in nine more movies with other big stars such as Montgomery Clift, Anthony Quinn and Myrna Loy. She also gave a Tony-nominated performance in the Broadway play The Pleasure of His Company and appeared in television shows, including The Virginian and Playhouse 90. An important chapter in her life occurred while playing Saint Clare in the movie Francis of Assisi, which was filmed on location in Italy.

Born Dolores Hicks to a complicated and colorful Chicago family, Mother Dolores has travelled a charmed yet challenging road in her journey toward God, serenity and, yes, love. She entered the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, Connecticut, at the peak of her career, not in order to leave the glamorous world of acting she had dreamed of since childhood, but in order to answer a mysterious call she heard with the "ear of the heart". While contracted for another film and engaged to be married, she abandoned everything to become a bride of Christ.

Quiero Ser Santo

Quiero Ser Santo

Why Believe? is a series unlike any other. It is truly a New Apologetics for the New Evangelization!

Today, many Catholics confront daily the implicit claim that our secular culture provides fully for human happiness. 7 Big Myths About The Catholic Church

7 Big Myths About The Catholic Church

The Roman Catholic Church has long been the target of suspicion and hostility. But how much of this is based on ignorance and prejudice and how much is the fruit of thoughtful consideration of the facts?

This book separates fact from fiction. Without excusing or justifying wrongdoing, author Christopher Kaczor clarifies official Catholic teaching and demonstrates that much popular opinion about Catholicism is based on misunderstanding and misinformation. He also provides robust and lucid arguments for Catholic belief and practice.

No one book can answer everyone’s questions or objections about Catholicism, but this work examines seven of the most controversial and common myths about the Catholic Church.

Topics include:
• The Church Opposes Science
• The Church Hates Gays
• The Church Hates Women
• The Church Opposes Same-Sex Marriage Because of Bigotry
• Priestly Celibacy Caused the Crisis of Priestly Pedophilia

God: What Every Catholic Should Know - Hardcover

God: What Every Catholic Should Know - Hardcover

Some of us might protest that we are not smart enough to do theology and that less is more when it comes to contemplating the divine. But if God is perfect, wonderful, all goodness, love itself—as the Bible tells us in 1 John 4:8—it would be strange indeed if we did not want to give our whole selves to God, including our minds. After all, the Lord himself tells us: “you shall love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30).

Series Summary

The new What Every Catholic Should Know series is intended for the average faithful Catholic who wants to know more about Catholic faith and culture. The authors in this series take a panoramic approach to the topic of each book aimed at a non-specialist but enthusiastic readership.

Doors in the Walls of the World

Doors in the Walls of the World

"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." — Hamlet

After William Shakespeare's Horatio sees the ghost of Hamlet's father, and scarcely believes his own eyes, Hamlet tells him that there is more to reality than he can know or imagine, including ghosts.

Hamlet's statement suggests that the walls of the material world, which we perceive with our senses and analyze with our intellects, have doors that open into the More beyond them. Philosopher Peter Kreeft explains in this book that the More includes "The Absolute Good, Platonic Forms, God, gods, angels, spirits, ghosts, souls, Brahman, Rta (the Hindu ontological basis for cosmological karma), Nirvana, Tao, 'the will of Heaven', The Meaning of It All, Something that deserves a capital letter."

With razor-sharp reasoning and irrepressible joy, Kreeft helps us to find the doors in the walls of the world. Drawing on history, physical science, psychology, religion, philosophy, literature, and art, he invites us to welcome what lies on the other side so that we can begin living the life of Heaven in the here and now.

About the Author

Peter Kreeft, Ph.D., a Professor of Philosophy at Boston College, is the well-known author of over thirty-five books on a wide range of spiritual themes, including Prayer for Beginners, Back to Virtue, and Angels and Demons.

Praise for Doors in the Walls of the World

"Tragically, one result of the dominant interpretation of reality today is that the world becomes extraordinarily boring. There's no ultimate point to anything. But the Christian vision is entirely different! It tells us that history is in fact His-story, and His story is one that is dramatic, scary, and beautiful beyond imagination. With his characteristic wit and intellect, Peter Kreeft opens our minds and hearts to this exciting and life-changing drama, in which you and I play leading roles."
Fr. John Riccardo, Author, Heaven Starts Now

"Kreeft fits his reader with the lens of story to see clearly the deeper meanings of life, death, love, sex, poetry, human longing—for starters. This microscopic look at the big picture proves that Plato's Cave not only has an opening, but a system of vents, shafts, and tunnels leading to the light of the Real. Want a wise guide, a Monty Python sketch writer, and clarity-obsessed teacher who distills practical wisdom from wildly eclectic sources? Buy this book, already."Patrick Coffin, Host, The Patrick Coffin Show

"Kreeft is ready always to give reasons for the wonder that is in him. The proper philosophy, the door-flinging-open philosophy, does not reduce my thoughts about God to atoms, but splits the atom and sees in it the fire of God's power and love. Or, to put it in the words of the Psalmist, 'I rejoiced when I heard them say, Let us go up to the house of the Lord.'"Anthony Esolen, Ph.D., Professor of English, Thomas More College

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Heaven - Book

Peter Kreeft provides a look at the nature of Heaven that offers all readers a refreshingly clear, theologically sound, and always fascinating glimpse of that "undiscovered country." Kreeft's engaging and informative account thoughtfully answers such intriguing questions as:

- Will we all be equal in Heaven?
- What will we do in Heaven?
- Will we know everything in Heaven?
- Can we know the joy of Heaven now?

Kreeft combines solid scholarship with a lively ability to communicate his findings. He speaks to the heart and mind, blending contemporary thinking and classical views to give us an unexcelled look at one of the most popular, yet least understood, subjects in religion.

I Thirst: 40 Days with Mother Teresa (Leatherbound)

I Thirst: 40 Days with Mother Teresa (Leatherbound)

St. Teresa of Calcutta was a woman known and loved for her tender work among the poorest of the poor. Behind her drive and desire to serve Christ’s poor was a profound understanding of the thirst of God for man, and man’s thirst for God. This guided meditation on Scripture and the teaching of Mother Teresa will lead those who read it into the heart of the mystery of God’s thirst for souls, and how man can meet the Lord’s thirst. Fr. Joseph Langford, an intimate friend of Mother Teresa’s and a co-founder with her of the Missionary of Charity Fathers, leads the reader into Mother Teresa’s love of God, and helps foster the love of God in the heart of the reader.

Divided into seven main sections, these meditations will provoke prayer on:

– The Dynamics of Thirst

– Prayer as Thirst

– Our Lady’s Example in Meeting God’s Thirst

– Thirst in the Service of God

– Sharing in the Thirst of Christ

– Jesus as the Incarnation of God’s Thirst

– Satiated Thirst

I Thirst provides an opportunity to spend a few minutes every day with Mother Teresa and the thirst of our Lord. It provides an opportunity to grow in intimacy, and to meet the thirst of God with our own thirst for him.

About the Author

Fr. Joseph Langford (1951-2010)

Fr. Joseph Langford co-founded the Missionary of Charity Fathers in 1984 with Mother Teresa. He often gave retreats on Mother Teresa’s spirituality both to the Missionaries of Charity congregations and to many other groups. He is the author of the popular work on Mother Teresa, Mother Teresa’s Secret Fire. He recognized in Mother Teresa’s encounter with the thirst of Jesus and her emphasis on satiating that thirst a powerful symbol of God’s love for each person and a road into experiencing that love more profoundly.

Praise for I Thirst: 40 Days with Mother Teresa

Fr. Langford was confessor and retreat master for Mother Teresa’s religious sisters, as well as her confidante, in a privileged position to know the secrets Jesus had confided to her. Thus to have in this book, I Thirst, Fr. Langford’s retreat notes on Mother’s understanding of Jesus’ cry from the cross, is to have a priceless treasure. The untold riches of Mother Teresa’s heart – which are nothing but the untold riches of Christ’s own Heart – are here before us in these pages.

–Suzie Andres, author of Homeschooling with Gentleness, A Little Way of Homeschooling (Christendom Press, 2004)

If you thirst for the living water of God, follow the wisdom of Mother Teresa and she will surely lead you to the source.

–Dan Burke, President of EWTN News and the Avila Institute for Spiritual Formation

Father Langford’s reflections take us into the heart of Mother Teresa’s spirituality. Based on his close relationship with Mother and his own contemplation and teaching on this theme, these meditations help us encounter God more in our thirst for Him and His thirst for us.

–Dr. Edward Sri, Vice President for Formation, Fellowship of Catholic University Students

Ironically, in a world supposedly overflowing with self-esteem, many, many people cannot believe that "God thirsts" for them. This little book makes a convincing scriptural case that it is true! And moves us to love God, ourselves, and others better because of it. It is a perfect gem of spiritual reading .

–Helen M. Alvaré, Professor of Law, The Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University

In 2008, I traveled to Ethiopia for Catholic Relief Services and visited the large, bustling orphanage of the Missionaries of Charity, which served thousands of people of all ages each day. When I asked about the source of the sisters’ energy for all of this good work, I was led into a primitive chapel with a tabernacle and the words “I thirst,” over the Blessed Sacrament. The book, I Thirst: 40 Days with Mother Teresa, written by a priest who worked with Mother Teresa, provides 40 day portions of the rich spirituality of Saint Teresa of Calcutta. I Thirst communicates well Jesus’ desire or thirst to love us deeply and our inner thirst for His presence in our lives. I strongly encourage its use during Lent or any other time of the year.

I Thirst: 40 Days with Mother Teresa (Paperback)

I Thirst: 40 Days with Mother Teresa (Paperback)

More Christianity: Finding the Fullness of the Faith

More Christianity: Finding the Fullness of the Faith

C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity is a work that has impacted generations of Christians. It is a brilliant explanation and defense of the Faith that has led many to follow in the way of Christ. But as profound and wise as it is, it is still incomplete. It gives direction for a sincere disciple to follow Christ, but that disciple might not be quite as willing to follow Christ through St. Peter.

This is what Dwight Longenecker's book, More Christianity, does. It follows Peter into the Catholic Church. In a time when thousands of Christian denominations exist, and Protestantism still remains strong in the United States, why be a Catholic? More Christianity gives thorough and insightful answers to many of the main questions and hotly contested debates that arise from non-Catholic Christians. Lest someone think Longenecker presumes to piggyback or cash in on Lewis' work, or set himself up as Lewis' successor, that is not the case. What he does-and does brilliantly-is present the doctrine of the Church with succinct explanations of topics that arise in Catholic/Protestant discussion: common ground in the Scripture, the role of tradition, the Mass, the papacy, Marian dogmas, purgatory, the communion of saints, prayer, and more.

This abridged edition of his work leaves nothing wanting and invites the reader to consider many of Lewis' greatest triumphs of Christian apologetics as well as some of his deficiencies. In Longenecker's skilled hands, More Christianity leads the disciple into knowing that he follows Christ when he follows Peter's successor in the Catholic Church.

About the Author

Dwight Longenecker was brought up an Evangelical, studied at the fundamentalist Bob Jones University, and later was ordained an Anglican priest in England. After ten years in the Anglican ministry as a curate, a chaplain at Cambridge, and a country parson, in 1995 Dwight was received into full communion with the Catholic Church. He has published in numerous religious magazines and papers in the UK, Ireland, and the United States, writing on film and theology, apologetics, biblical commentary, and Catholic culture.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta: A Personal Portrait

Mother Teresa of Calcutta: A Personal Portrait

Mother Teresa’s life sounds like a legend: the Albanian girl who entered an Irish order to go to India as a missionary and became an “Angel of the Poor” for countless people.

Fr. Leo Maasburg was there as her close companion for many years, traveling with her throughout the world and was witness to countless miracles and incredible little-known occurrences. In this personal portrait of the beloved nun, he presents amazing stories about her that most people have never heard, wonderful and delightful stories about miracles, small and great, that he was privileged to experience at Mother Teresa’s side.

They all tell of her limitless trust in God’s love, of the way the power of faith can move mountains, and of hope that can never die. These stories reveal a humorous, gifted, wise, and arresting woman who has a message of real hope for our time. It’s the life story of one of the most important women of the twentieth century as it has never been told before.

Richard Lee couldn’t have been more surprised when he died right before Christmas. Yet it was an even bigger surprise to watch his three grown-up children return home to deal with his funeral arrangements—and their personal grief and conflicts.

There’s David, the successful businessman. There’s Jonathan, the failed artist. There’s Ruth, the wayward daughter. Each one has a reckoning with the father they didn’t understand. And Richard Lee learns more about them than he ever knew in life.

At turns poignant and funny, Blue Christmas is one family’s discovery that Christmas is still a time of miracles.

Mercy: What Every Catholic Should Know (Hardcover) - Book

Mercy: What Every Catholic Should Know (Hardcover) - Book

In Mercy: What Every Catholic Should Know, Fr. Daniel Moloney covers a broad range of topics regarding mercy that are prevalent for our society today. Beginning from an unexpected perspective in the first half of the book, Fr. Moloney approaches mercy from a political point of view, explaining how mercy is in fact truly and intimately interwoven with politics and power. Through this lens, he touches upon pertinent topics such as legal punishments, the death penalty, and self-defense. He also assesses the clergy scandals, laying out why they occurred, what went wrong in how they were dealt with, and how the Church can improve moving forward for the greater glory of God. He eloquently explains how mercy is not synonymous with leniency, but is an act of responding to a privation, a lack of something which ought to be there. Sometimes the road to this may have to be tough love for the good of all involved.

Fr. Moloney invites the reader to wrestle with the supposed contradiction of God saying that he is merciful, yet killing and punishing his creation. Moloney ultimately resolves this apparent contradiction by highlighting God’s identity as the loving Father, explaining how, similar to good earthly fathers, sometimes the most loving route to take in truly loving your children and bringing them to their ultimate good is through the course of tough love. God is always good and loving, and his justice and mercy go hand-in-hand.

Fr. Daniel Moloney, PhD, a priest for the Archdiocese of Boston, is the Catholic chaplain at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before his ordination in 2010, he earned a doctorate in Philosophy from Notre Dame, worked at think tanks in Princeton, Washington, D.C., and New York, and served as the associate editor of First Things.

The Tears of Christ

The Tears of Christ

“Jesus wept, not merely from the deep thoughts of his understanding but from spontaneous tenderness, from the goodness and mercy, the encompassing loving-kindness and exuberant affection of the Son of God for his own work, the race of man.”

This precious insight takes us to the heart of the interior life of St. John Henry Newman (1801–1890), from the treasures of which these meditations are offered as a devotional aid for the season of Lent. Drawn chiefly from his sermons and gently modernized, these meditations offer a share in the fruit of his contemplation, that we might the better enjoy with him the “one thing which is all in all to us,” which is “to live in Christ’s presence, to hear his voice, to see his countenance.”

Movies such as Risen and books such as Bill O'Reilly's Killing Jesus raise questions about what really happened to the crucified body of Jesus of Nazareth. Using a popular question-and-answer format, Carl Olson examines the historical evidence concerning Jesus's controversial fate.

Did Jesus really die on the Cross? If so, what became of his body? Was it stolen? Misplaced?

Is the Resurrection a cleverly devised plot to found a new religion? Or a myth? Or a mass hallucination?

Shakespeare the Catholic - Book

Shakespeare the Catholic - Book

Best-selling literary writer Joseph Pearce presents a stimulating and vivid biography of the world's most revered playwright and poet. Unabashedly provocative and sure to be controversial, this work strives to separate historical fact from fiction about the beloved Bard, arguing the case with scholarship, insight, and keen observation. Famous, yet almost unknown, Shakespeare is not only one of the greatest figures in human history, he is also one of the most elusive. Who was he? What were his beliefs? Can we really understand his plays if we don’t know the man who wrote them? These are some of the questions that are asked and answered in this gripping and engaging study. Shakespeare the Catholic claims that books about the Bard have got him totally wrong. They misread the man and misread his work. The true Shakespeare has eluded the grasp of the critics. Dealing with the facts of Shakespeare's life and times, Pearce's quest leads to the inescapable conclusion that Shakespeare was a believing Catholic living in very anti-Catholic times.

The Case for Jesus - Book

The Case for Jesus - Book

For well over a hundred years now, many scholars have questioned the historical truth of the Gospels, claiming that they were originally anonymous. Others have even argued that Jesus of Nazareth did not think he was God and never claimed to be divine.

In The Case for Jesus, Dr. Brant Pitre, the bestselling author of Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist, goes back to the sources—the biblical and historical evidence for Christ—in order to answer several key questions, including:

  • Were the four Gospels really anonymous?
  • Are the Gospels folklore? Or are they biographies?
  • What about the so-called “Lost Gospels,” such as “Q” and the Gospel of Thomas?
  • Did Jesus claim to be God?
  • Why was Jesus crucified?
  • What is the evidence for the Resurrection?

As The Case for Jesus will show, recent discoveries in New Testament scholarship, as well as neglected evidence from ancient manuscripts and the early church fathers, together have the potential to pull the rug out from under a century of skepticism toward the traditional Gospels. Above all, Pitre shows how the divine claims of Jesus of Nazareth can only be understood by putting them in their ancient Jewish context.

Jesus and the Jewish Roots of MARY: Unveiling the Mother of the Messiah

Jesus and the Jewish Roots of MARY: Unveiling the Mother of the Messiah

THIS ITEM IS CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK.

From best-selling author of Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist Dr. Brant Pitre comes this new book examining the Blessed Virgin Mary in a whole new way.

Using his in-depth knowledge of the Bible and ancient Judaism, Dr. Pitre uses his familiar voice to answer important questions about the Biblical understanding of Mary and the Church's teaching on her. This book will explore questions like:

– Are Catholic teachings on Mary really biblical? Or are they the "traditions of men"?
– Should she be called the "Mother of God," or just the mother of Jesus?
– Did she actually remain a virgin her whole life or do the "brothers of Jesus" refer to her other children?
– By praying to Mary, are Catholics worshipping her?
– And what does Mary have to do with the quest to understand Jesus?

In Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary, Dr. Pitre takes readers step-by-step from the Garden of Eden to the Book of Revelation to reveal how deeply biblical Catholic beliefs about Mary really are. Dr. Pitre uses the Old Testament and Ancient Judaism to unlock how the Bible itself teaches that Mary is in fact the new Eve, the Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven and Earth, and the new Ark of the Covenant.

Praise for Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary

This book is vintage Brant Pitre: clear, persuasive, readable, and above all, inspiring. It causes us not only to know more about the Mother of God, but also to love her more.
– Bishop Robert Barron, Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles and author of To Light a Fire on the Earth

I did not think a single book could be written about Mary that would excite and unite Catholic and Protestant readers - scholars, clergy and laity alike. What Pitre does with the Bible and Marian typology is clear and compelling. A joy to read, this is the best biblical study of Mary I have ever read. A true masterpiece.
– Dr. Scott Hahn, author of The Lamb's Supper and The Fourth Cup

Brant Pitre takes important theological truths and makes them not only interesting, but exciting. This book will revolutionize your understanding of the most important woman in history.
– Jennifer Fulwiler, author of One Beautiful Dream

Combining rich Biblical scholarship with an engaging, easy-to-read style, this highly accessible book offers a fresh look at Mary in the Bible. Pitre clearly and convincingly shows that the Bible reveals much more about Jesus’ mother than is commonly appreciated today. A must read for every Christian who takes the Bible seriously and is open to what God’s Word has to say about Mary.

Humanae Vitae

Humanae Vitae

VIEW A SAMPLE!

The papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (On Human Life) made headlines worldwide. Many talked about the encyclical when it was issued in 1968, but few actually read it. Why is it perhaps the most controversial document in modern Church history?

On Human Life combines Humanae Vitae with commentary by popular and respected Catholic authors Mary Eberstadt, James Hitchcock, and Jennifer Fulwiler in order to address this question and shed light on the document’s enduring wisdom.

Humanae Vitae is Pope Paul VI’s explanation of why the Catholic Church rejects contraception. The pope referred to two aspects, or meanings, of human sexuality: the unitive and the procreative. He also warned of the consequences if contraception became widely practiced—consequences that have since come to pass: greater infidelity in marriage, confusion regarding the nature of human sexuality and its role in society, the objectification of women for sexual pleasure, compulsory government birth control policies, and the reduction of the human body to an instrument of human manipulation. The separation of sexuality from its dual purpose has also resulted in artificial reproduction technologies, including cloning, that threaten the dignity of the human person.

Although greeted by controversy and opposition, Humanae Vitae has continued to influence Catholic moral teaching. St. John Paul II’s popular “theology of the body” drew deeply on the insights of Paul VI. Pope Benedict and now Pope Francis have upheld the long-standing teaching, and a new generation of Catholics, as well as non-Catholics, is embracing the truths of the encyclical.

About the Author

Pope Paul VI led the Catholic Church from 1963 until his death in 1978. The former Cardinal Archbishop of Milan, he succeeded Pope John XXIII and oversaw the Second Vatical Council, bringing it to completion in 1965. In October, 2014, Pope Francis beatified Paul VI, the first step toward his recognition as a saint.

The Power of Silence: Against the Dictatorship of Noise

The Power of Silence: Against the Dictatorship of Noise

This item is currently out of stock.

In a time when technology penetrates our lives in so many ways and materialism exerts such a powerful influence over us, Cardinal Robert Sarah presents a bold book about the strength of silence. The modern world generates so much noise, he says, that seeking moments of silence has become both harder and more necessary than ever before.

Silence is the indispensable doorway to the divine, explains the cardinal in this profound conversation with Nicolas Diat. Within the hushed and hallowed walls of the La Grande Chartreux, the famous Carthusian monastery in the French Alps, Cardinal Sarah addresses the following questions: Can those who do not know silence ever attain truth, beauty, or love? Do not wisdom, artistic vision, and devotion spring from silence, where the voice of God is heard in the depths of the human heart?

Father Michael Schmitz addresses the teachings of the Catholic Church on the issue of same-sex attraction. With compassion and clarity, he shows that the Church’s teachings are rooted in the yearnings for authentic love that are shared by all who are made in the image and likeness of God. With his trademark fresh and engaging style, Fr. Schmitz addresses:

 • Different types of love
 • The nature of the human being and human sexuality
 • Disordered attractions
 • Identity and sexuality
 • Jesus’s teachings on marriage
 • Popular misconceptions about the teachings of the Church and same-sex attraction
 • God’s all-encompassing love

Above all, Made for Love is about genuine love: how we can truly love each other, how the Bible teaches us to love, and how God is not simply loving, but love itself.

About the Author

Fr. Mike Schmitz is one of the leading speakers in the Catholic church today. He preaches to youth and young adults across the country about the love of God and the call of Jesus Christ for saints to be raised up in the Church. Praise for Made for Love

“Fr. Michael Schmitz strikes all the right notes, explaining what the Church teaches (the true), why it’s the right path (the good), and how it leads to happiness (the beautiful). He explains the Church’s full teachings on homosexuality but with remarkable ‘gentleness and reverence’ (1 Pt 3:15).”

– Brandon Vogt, founder of ClaritasU and author of RETURN: How to Draw Your Child Back to the Church

“When others would muddy the waters of Our Lord’s love for all, Fr. Schmitz’s book filters the pure and renewing love of God for those who experience same-sex attraction and helps their loved ones understand this particular struggle.”

– Curtis Martin, founder of FOCUS

“In a culture that confuses love with moral relativism, many people have difficulties with the Church’s teaching on homosexuality. Fr. Schmitz helps us approach this topic with compassion and clarity, showing how the Church’s teaching on this topic is all about love—that we are made from love, by love, and for love.”

Going Deeper: A Reasoned Exploration of God and Truth

Going Deeper: A Reasoned Exploration of God and Truth

The vast majority of human beings believe in a higher power, but few can clearly and articulately explain what they believe in or why. When it comes to explaining one's beliefs, most rely on intuition or personal experience, relegating faith to the realm of subjective judgment as opposed to objective truth. In Going Deeper: A Reasoned Exploration of God and Truth, Leo Severino presents a systematic, easy-to-understand, journey that grounds the certitude of faith in logic and reason. The author maps out a train of thought that begins with everyday events, reasons its way through proofs of the existence of God, then goes on to describe the deep purpose inscribed in every human heart. For those not well versed in theology or philosophy, this book is an accessible way to tether matters of faith to demonstrable premises and logical conclusions. For those with deeper theological formation, this book will provide fresh perspectives on the classic arguments that demonstrate how faith and reason go hand in hand.

About the Author

Leo Severino earned degrees, with honors, in Philosophy and Law from the University of Southern California. He worked as a young lawyer in the world of corporate transactions before transitioning to filmmaking, working at 20th Century Fox before co-founding Metanoia Films. Leo has written and produced several feature films including Bella and Little Boy. This book is the fruit of years of theological studies and teaching classes on the Christian faith.

Praise for Going Deeper

This book is a rare gem: a pity, engaging, and creative book on logic and basic philosophy that is never dull, pedantic, or even predictable. Severino's gifts as a thinker and communicator are as impressive as they are unassuming.

–Carl Olson, Editor, Catholic World Report; Author, Did Jesus Really Rise from the Dead?

With atheism and agnosticism on the rise, and in the face of changing cultural attitudes, Going Deeper is a breath of fresh air and a shot in the arm.

–Steve Ray, Author, Crossing the Tiber; Host, The Footprints of God film series

Going Deeper walks you through questions that every person has asked from the beginning of time.

–Terry Barber, Author, How to Share Your Faith with Anyone

Many people think faith and reason are at odds. Leo Severino's careful reasoning shows why that idea is mistaken. God's existence and human purpose are knowable, starting from deep reflection on something as simple as a leaf.

Mark Shea (1)

By What Authority? - Book

By What Authority? - Book

In this popular work of apologetics, Mark Shea presents a lively and entertaining look at his conversion to Catholicism from Evangelicalism and his discovery of Christian Tradition. As an Evangelical, Shea accepted the principle of Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone) as the basis of faith. Now as a Catholic convert, he skillfully explains how and why Sacred Tradition occupies a central role in divine revelation.

Tracing his own journey of intellectual and spiritual awakening, Shea begins by looking for a rejoinder to those modern-day false prophets who would claim that Scripture itself is not to be trusted, and he ends with his conviction that Tradition, as explained by the Catholic Church, is the only sure guarantee of the truth of the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Note: This is an abridged version of By What Authority?

--------------------------

Praise for By What Authority?

"A crystal clear and compelling case for Sacred Tradition, on the basis of logic, history, and Scripture. It is simply the best I have found."
- Scott Hahn, Author of Rome Sweet Home

"This is not just another book of Catholic apologetics. It is not only a good thing; it's also a good read. Concrete, clear, compelling arguments."
- Peter Kreeft, Author of Handbook of Catholic Apologetics

"An important service for Catholics, Evangelicals, and all those seeking a firm grounding for faith. Shea argues powerfully for the extra-biblical authority of Sacred Tradition as a depository and source of revelation side by side with the Bible, to which it testifies and which it interprets with authority."
- Russel Shaw, Author of American Church

Remade for Happiness

Remade for Happiness

View book sample

In this classic work, Fulton Sheen explains the secret of authentic happiness: being spiritually remade. A genuinely spiritual life, Sheen contends, consists in more than obeying a set of commands, reading the Bible, or even following the example of Jesus. Before all else, it consists in being recreated and incorporated into a new, higher kind of life—the supernatural life of grace—and in being brought into a new kind of spiritual relationship, as a child of God through Jesus Christ.

What does it mean to be a Christian? Christianity is not a system of ethics; it is a life. It is not good advice; it is divine adoption. Being a Christian does not consist in just being kind to the poor, going to church, singing hymns, or serving on parish committees, though it includes all of these. It is first and foremost a love relationship with Jesus Christ.

Why Humanae Vitae is Still Right

Why Humanae Vitae is Still Right

"Paul VI's genius proved prophetic: he had the courage to stand against the majority, to defend moral discipline, to exercise a 'brake' on the culture, to oppose present and future neo-Malthusianism."Pope Francis

After half a century, how has the teaching of Pope Paul VI on marriage and birth control, presented in his encyclical Humanae vitae (On Human Life), held up? Very well, says philosopher Janet Smith and her colleagues in Why Humanae Vitae Is Still Right. A sequel to Smith's classic Why Humanae Vitae Was Right, this new volume shows how the ethical, theological, spiritual, and sociological case for Paul VI's controversial document remains strong—indeed, how it's in some ways even stronger today, following Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body and in light of the problems caused by the sexual revolution.

In addition to essays by Dr. Smith herself, the book features contributions by other renowned experts and scholars such as Mary Eberstadt (author of the best-selling Adam and Eve after the Pill), George Weigel, Therese Scarpelli Corey, Michael Waldstein, Christopher West, Obianuju Ekeocha (author of the best-selling Target Africa), Maria Fedoryka, Deborah Savage, Derek Doroski, Angela LaFranchi, William Newton, Joseph Atkinson, Michele M. Schumacher, and Peter Colosi.

Why Humanae Vitae Is Still Right includes the Krakow Document composed under the supervision of Cardinal Karol Wojtyla (later, Pope John Paul II), which provided research by moral theologians and other experts that helped to shape Humanae vitae to be a more personalistic document.

Five Pillars of the Spiritual Life

Five Pillars of the Spiritual Life

Click here to read a sample.

Saint Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, espoused the ideal of becoming “contemplatives in action.” He was convinced that contemplation (the deep awareness and appropriation of the unconditional love of God) should affect our actions, and that our actions need to be brought back to contemplation.

These are five dimensions of the spiritual life:

  1.  the Holy Eucharist
  2.  spontaneous prayer
  3.  the Beatitudes
  4.  partnership with the Holy Spirit
  5.  the contemplative life itself

This book is a “jump start” to a deeper spiritual life for today’s active people, and it will enflame the desire to read the masters and to enter even more deeply into the heart of God.

Topics include:

  •  God as Abba
  •  The Heart of Jesus
  •  The importance of agape love
  •  A checklist for spiritual growth
  •  The role of the Holy Spirit in the spiritual life
  •  Incorporating the active life with the contemplative life

Praise for Five Pillars of the Spiritual Life

“The publication of Father Spitzer’s book is a happy coincidence, coming after Pope Benedict’s Jesus of Nazareth. Both are strong statements of New Testament spirituality and provide an escape from the ‘bleaching of Christ’s image,’ caused by the exclusive use of the historical-critical method. Informed Catholic readers are summoned by this book to take the Christ of the Gospels intelligently and seriously.”

Love Unveiled: The Catholic Faith Explained (Paperback)

Get the book based on the acclaimed Symbolon: The Catholic Faith Explained series!

If you were asked what immediately comes to mind when you hear the words “Catholic Church,” would you answer “an intimate relationship with the God who loves me?”

If not, you would do well to read this engaging and thought-provoking book that explains why such a relationship is the reason for everything the Church does and teaches. Dr. Edward Sri will show you how all the pieces of the Catholic Faith, including the most baffling ones, fit together to make one beautiful mosaic of God's love for us and our own participation in that all-encompassing love.

Using the Catechism of the Catholic Church as his itinerary, Dr. Sri addresses such often-heard questions as:

•  Why do I need the Church—can't I be spiritual on my own?
•  Isn't one religion just as good as another?
•  How is the death of a man two thousand years ago relevant for my life today?
•  Why does the Church talk so much about morality?
•  Can't I make up my own morals?
•  Is it really our responsibility to care for the poor—doesn't God help those who help themselves?
•  Why do Catholic and Protestants disagree?
•  Must Catholics worship Mary and always obey the pope?

Excellent for Catechists, RCIA teams, Catechuments, small group leaders and participants!

Rethinking Mary in the New Testament

Rethinking Mary in the New Testament

Scholars often have questioned how much the New Testament can tell us about the Mother of Jesus. After all, Mary appears only in a few accounts and speaks on limited occasions. Can Scripture really support the many Marian beliefs developed in the Church over time?

In Rethinking Mary in the New Testament, Dr. Edward Sri shows that the Bible reveals more about Mary than is commonly appreciated. For when the Mother of Jesus does appear in Scripture, it’s often in passages of great importance, steeped in the Jewish Scriptures, and packed with theological significance.

This comprehensive work examines every key New Testament reference to Mary, addressing common questions along the way, such as:

– What was Mary’s life like before the Annunciation?
– Is there biblical support for Mary’s Immaculate Conception and Perpetual Virginity?
– Does Scripture reveal Mary as our spiritual mother?
– What does it mean for Mary to be “full of grace”?
– How is Mary the “New Eve,” “Ark of the Covenant,” and “Queen Mother”?
– Can Mary be identified with the “woman” in Revelation 12?
– Rethinking Mary in the New Testament offers a fresh, in-depth look at the Mother of Jesus in Scripture—one that helps us know Mary better and her role in God’s plan.

JUST ONE WORD CAN TELL US A LOT ABOUT MARY

How can just the words “hail,” “full of grace,” or “woman” reveal so much about the Mother of Jesus? This in-depth, fresh look at Mary in the Bible explores every key New Testament reference to Mary. Drawing on recent insights in biblical scholarship and traditional wisdom sometimes overlooked, Dr. Edward Sri devotes entire chapters to analyzing the small scriptural details to help us know better who Mary really is and the role she plays in God’s plan of salvation.

About the Author

Edward Sri, Ph.D., is a well-known author and speaker. He is a founding leader of FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students), currently serves as FOCUS vice president of formation, and holds a doctorate from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. Praise for Rethinking Mary

This is Sri's best book so far—and that means it is an extraordinary book indeed.  A book like this could only be authored by someone with a mastery of contemporary biblical scholarship who also happens to be a lifelong scholar of Mariology. This rare conjunction describes Edward Sri.  Easy to read, serious, and scholarly, this book delivers on its promises.  Here we meet the Mary whom the evangelists aimed to reveal to us.
Dr. Matthew Levering, James N. and Mary D. Perry Jr. Chair of Theology, Mundelein Seminary

In this work, Sri brings his remarkable knowledge of Mary in Scripture to bear on one of the most pressing needs in the Church today: an up-to-date and thoroughly exegetical analysis of every key New Testament passage regarding Mary. This book is a major achievement, and a must-read for anyone interested in what the Bible really teaches about the Mother of Jesus.

How do we talk about morality in a world that no longer believes in truth? When we’re bombarded with messages of “Be tolerant!” “Don’t judge!” and “Coexist!” many good people feel afraid to say anything is right or wrong anymore.

This book gives us an important key to responding to relativism effectively—a Catholic moral worldview. Learn how Catholic morality is all about love, how making a judgment is not judging a person’s soul, and how, in the words of Pope Francis, “relativism wounds people” and is “the spiritual poverty of our times.”

Ideal for men’s and women’s groups, adult faith formation, and young adult ministry, this book gives Catholics greater confidence in God’s moral law, greater clarity in how to explain it effectively to our secular friends, and greater compassion for those with whom we disagree.

Mary in the Bible and in Our Lives

Mary in the Bible and in Our Lives

This book offers a clear, beautiful exposition of Catholic beliefs about Mary. Not a history or a compendium, it was written by a Carmelite monk who spent decades praying and pondering the mysteries of the faith concerning the Mother of Jesus.

Catholic Mariology has matured through centuries of meditation upon both the Bible and the Church's faith in the Incarnation. The Marian dogmas of the Church are guarantors of the full meaning of the statement in the Gospel of John that "the word became flesh and dwelt among us" (1:14).

Fr. Wilfrid Stinissen shows that Mariology corrects any attempt to minimize the good news that God became man so that man could become like God. In writing about Mary, he underlines the astonishing truth that God has initiated an intimate communion with mankind. In a world that strives to reduce human dignity, Mary reveals the very high value of man in God's eyes and God's wondrous love and plan for each one of us.

Praise for Mary In the Bible and Our Lives

"An acclaimed spiritual writer and holy monk presents the beautiful Catholic beliefs about Mary that he has meditated on throughout his whole priestly life. Fr. Stinissen draws from both Sacred Scripture and the long tradition of the Church's beliefs about Mary and her singular privileges from God as Christ's mother to help us know and love her more."
— Edward Sri, Author, Who Am I to Judge?

"This wonderful book on the Virgin Mary by the esteemed Carmelite spiritual master offers both insightful doctrinal clarity and a stimulus to a renewed love for Our Lady. His chapter on Mary's experience of darkness as part of her maternal role in God's plan is of great value, a unique contribution to spirituality."
— Fr. Donald Haggerty, Author, The Contemplative Hunger

"Fr. Wilfrid Stinissen provides us with the scriptural and theological tools to understand, explain, and truly believe Mary's Yes to God and to emulate it in our own lives."

Here is the astonishing true story the harrowing experiences of a young German seminarian drafted into Hitler's dreaded SS at the onset of World War II. How it all came to pass is astounding.

Father Goldmann tells of his incredible experiences of the trial of war, his many escapes from almost certain death, and the diabolical persecution that he and his fellow Catholic soldiers encountered on account of their faith. Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc

Very few people know that Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) wrote a major work on Joan of Arc. Still fewer know that he considered it not only his most important but also his best work. He spent twelve years in research and many months in France doing archival work and then made several attempts until he felt he finally had the story he wanted to tell. He reached his conclusion about Joan’s unique place in history only after studying in detail accounts written on both sides, the French and the English. A remarkably accurate biography of the life and mission of Joan of Arc told by one of this country’s greatest storytellers.

The Fragility of Order: Catholic Reflections on Turbulent Times

The Fragility of Order: Catholic Reflections on Turbulent Times

One of America's most prominent public intellectuals brings thirty-five years of experience in Washington and Rome to bear in analyzing the turbulence that characterizes world politics, American public life, and the Catholic Church in the early twenty-first century.

In these bracing essays, George Weigel reads such events as the First World War, the collapse of Communism, and the Obama and Trump presidencies through a distinctive cultural and moral lens, even as he offers new insights into Pope Francis and his challenging pontificate.

Throughout, two of Weigel's key convictions—that ideas have consequences for good and ill, and that the deepest currents of history flow through culture—illuminate political and economic life, and the life of the Church, in ways not often appreciated or understood.

Many of the chapters in this book originated in George Weigel's annual William E. Simon Lecture, which since 2001 has become a major event in Washington, D.C. They are unique in their application of philosophical and theological perspectives to the issues of history and politics, enabling the reader to see current events in a deeper way.

Praise for The Fragility of Order

"Every page in this book shines with moral clarity, literary pyrotechnics, and the illumination of history. The Fragility of Order proves once more that George Weigel is our Virgil through the dark woods of modernity."
— Mary Eberstadt, Senior Research Fellow, Faith and Reason Institute; Author, Adam and Eve after the Pill

"The essays in this volume, written independently over two decades, have a wonderful unity rooted in Weigel's penetrating intellect and global vision. His thoughts on Benedict XVI's 2006 Regensburg lecture – a lecture savagely misrepresented by critics at the time, but brilliant in retrospect – are worth the price of the entire book; but they're just one part of a lucid, compelling, and highly recommended read."
— Most Rev. Charles Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Philadelphia

"For over thirty turbulent years, George Weigel has been a steady voice of reason, providing his readers with theologically informed perspectives on politics and events. The Fragility of Order is a sober yet cautiously hopeful collection of essays on international relations, the travails of the Republic, and the state of the Church in a world where freedom, reason, and truth are under assault."
— Mary Ann Glendon, Learned Hand Professor of Law, Harvard University

"George Weigel, one of the world's foremost authorities on the Catholic Church, possesses a unique combination of deep theological understanding, political sophistication, and perceptive historical analysis that makes his insights about our turbulent times so illuminating. This book ultimately reminds us that good ideas, rooted in tradition, lead to good ends--and bad ones to ruinous outcomes."
— Raymond Arroyo, EWTN Lead Anchor; New York Times Best-Selling Author, the Will Wilder series

"The Fragility of Order can be read as a kind of history, moving on two levels. Weigel begins with the First World War and then brings us through the false dawn of the "end of history" on up to our perilous present day. At the same time, we watch the unfolding of Weigel himself – not just as a historian but also as a social critic and, most importantly, a theologian. Only a writer and thinker as gifted as Weigel could pull this off. He is the great clarifier for our muddled times."
— Andrew Ferguson, National Correspondent, Weekly Standard; Author, Crazy U and Land of Lincoln

"Weigel's superb essays on the difficulty of keeping order are a very welcome occasion for us to review where we have been, where we are now, and where we are likely to be if the order is not corrected."
— James V. Schall, S.J., Emeritus Professor of Political Philosophy, Georgetown University; Author, The Order of Things

"George Weigel is a leading American Catholic intellectual, and his thoughtfulness and erudition are on colorful display in The Fragility of Order. This insightful collection of essays touches on key issues related to culture, history, foreign policy and religion. Anyone interested in history, current events, and the role of the Church in the modern world will be enriched by reading this book."
— Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York

Praise for True Reformers

“In every age one encounters a cloud of witnesses whose lives articulate its deepest longings. This penetrating analysis—marked by spiritual, historical, and cultural insight—introduces the vibrant personalities who so clearly understood the larger implications hidden beneath the surface in the era of the European Reformations.”

– Don J. Briel, Bl. John Henry Newman Chair, University of Mary

“These stunning portraits of ten very great saints show the beauty of God’s grace shining through the lives of his closest friends. The path marked out by the True Reformers of the sixteenth century is the path we still need to walk in the twenty?first: the steep and narrow path of holiness.”

– Christopher O. Blum, Ph.D., Academic Dean and Professor of History and Philosophy, Augustine Institute

“To read these accounts is a kind of retreat. It provides an opportunity to reflect on our love of God, our prayer life, and the mission God has given each of us in light of our spiritual teachers.”

– Jonathan J. Reyes, Executive Director, of the Departement of Justice, Peace, and Human Development of the USCCB
